A long run (usually defined as anything longer than 75 to 90 minutes when marathon training) will prepare your bones, joints, muscles and ligaments for the fatigue and strain of a long race. An hour-plus run can also help hone your mental toughness. Running long can be boring, and there's usually some discomfort (fatigue, thirst, etc.).

Pool Running. Deep water pool running (perhaps the most running-specific non-running exercise) has been a staple for runners for generations; however, until recently deep-water running was used primarily by those looking to rehabilitate from injury rather than as a means of supplementation or even workout replacement. Times are indeed changing.
If that’s too simple, you can always jump ahead a few weeks to help you get to your first 5k. After that, I used a half-marathon training schedule for beginners to work up to 13 miles.
